Rules of Lent:
Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all
Catholics 14+ years old on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent.
Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 to 59 years (as health
permits). Fasting means that you eat less; and only one meal is a
full meal, and no eating between meals. Everyone, including
children and elders, should keep the Fridays of Lent as days of
penance; but how that’s done is left to you and should be ‘age
appropriate’!
All the faithful should strive to uphold the
threefold discipline of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We do
this from Ash Wednesday till the evening of Holy Thursday when we
begin the celebration of the Sacred Triduum. It is a serious
obligation for Catholics to keep Lent and prepare well for the
celebration of the Easter Paschal Mystery of Redemption.
Parish helps for the rules of Lent:
The “Little Black Book” is
available again this weekend after mass. “Little Black Book” is a
daily 7 minute meditation to help make this Lent a time of
spiritual reflection and growth. This is NOT the same book as
last year, even though it’s the same color. It is based on this
year’s Scripture cycle ‘C’. The reflections begin today! We ask
that you take just ONE BOOKLET per family so that more families
can use this tool. And we thank the two anonymous parishioners
whose generosity has made this possible. Donations are gratefully
accepted.
Rice Bowls “Rice Bowl”
is a ‘mite box’ for our almsgiving to the missions -- a project
of Catholic Relief Services. Through this arm of charity founded
in 1975, we Catholics reach out to the suffering and most
vulnerable of the world through sharing our ‘rice’ with the poor.
There is also a daily Lenten prayer printed on the box.
Stations of the Cross are
celebrated on each Friday of Lent at 7 PM. This devotion is a
“Prayer of the Imagination” as we walk with Jesus to Golgotha to
the place of the crucifixion.
